Chapter Fourteen

Love Thy Enemy

Iannina, Greece

The small lush agricultural valley held in the palm of the Pindus Mountains where Enise’s villa was located, was the perfect place for her retreat. The villa was nice, of course, but Enise was bored beyond measure. Iannina was a fair sized city, but by her standards it was also painfully provincial. Since moving there, however, she had solved a few mysteries concerning the failed raid.

Uncle Timur had indeed set her up, but she wasn’t surprised to find out so. The company was running into financial trouble with her idiot cousin now involved in it and she had threatened to make a hostile takeover a few months earlier. Timur had evidently taken her seriously and in all fairness, he was right to do so. It looked as though he had cut a deal with SATT to bail himself out financially.

Berk Ramsey entered the room, interrupting her thoughts. He was her new bodyguard and assistant, a man only slightly taller than her, with gravy eyes set deeply in his face and cadaverous cheekbones. His slight frame disguised a body of immense strength with knotted muscles on his shoulders and back.

“The new man is here,” he informed her.

Laurence walked over to the window and picked up the binoculars, focusing on the villa below. Another new arrival was being escorted into the house by Berk. Enise continued to gather new recruits and he knew he would better start adding some of his own. Like it or not, they were headed for more than a personal confrontation. He had considered telling her that he loved her, but couldn’t convince himself that Enise would stay under control even if he was willing to go that far. And he wasn’t.

He called Hugues. “She has at least eight men, two of which I know. Mercenaries. We’ve run into them before.”

“Who?”

“Naeem, the South African and Ramon, the Cuban. Remember them?”

“Yes. We’ve got Keeve, Malice, Dimitry and Vadim. Hans is out of commission for a while.”

“We need at least four more men,” Laurence concluded with a sigh.

“I can get two.”

“She’s getting restless.”

“Go calm her down.”

Laurence didn’t like the idea, but it had merit. “Find me four men,” he said.

“Watch your back, Laurence.”

“Make arrangements for a week from Friday,” Enise was saying to Berk as the phone rang. “He should have the shipment ready to move by then.”

A maid picked up the phone.

“And the pass into Albania? The same we used last week?” Berk inquired.

“Exactly,” Enise replied, then turned to snap at the maid, who was attempting to catch her attention. “What?!”

“A Mister Laurence for you, Miss,” the maid hurried to say.

“Why didn’t you say so, stupid?” Enise snapped again, taking the phone from her outstretched hand. “Laurence? Where are you?”

“Athens,” he lied smoothly.

Laurence spent a week with Enise, by the end of which he couldn’t keep up the pretence anymore. She talked wildly about her plans, especially about a raid she had made the previous week. That explained the activity he had observed. Her conversation seemed more excited than the situation warranted and her behaviour increasingly unpredictable.
